Support and Treatment in Early Psychosis (STEP)

STEP is a county-wide service for young people between the ages of 14 and 35 who are experiencing psychosis for the first time, and their family, friends and partners. It is a community-based service made up of three teams.

What is psychosis?

The main signs of psychosis include:

  • Paranoia - unusually high level of suspicion and/or persecution
  • Hallucinations - an experience that has not been caused by an external stimulus; such as seeing or hearing something others cannot detect
  • Delusional ideas - an unshakeable belief that is against the common understanding of others
  • Disorganised speech/behaviour - conversations that are difficult to follow, or actions that are strangely out of character
  • Significant changes in mood - mood can swing between extremes from very high (mania) to very low (depression)
  • Changes noted in everyday functioning (for example self neglect, social withdrawal and decreased occupational activity)
  • Experiences of psychosis vary from person to person and may change over time.

How to get help

Referrals to the STEP teams can be made by anyone who has concerns that someone is having psychotic experiences or by the person themselves. However, it is vital the person concerned is aware of the referral.

We encourage anyone to telephone STEP and speak informally with a member of the team if they are unsure.
